Avanzar IE Nonprofit Board Training
In 2023, the CIELO Fund, in collaboration with Latinos LEAD, a nonprofit organization that promotes more inclusive and effective civil society organizations, released a new report called Inclusive Leadership: Examining Disparities in Nonprofit Leadership for Latinos in the Inland Empire. The report analyzes Latino representation on 198 nonprofit boards in the Inland Empire. Findings highlight disparities in board diversity across sectors. The report found that while Latinos are 52% of the population, they only hold 13% of nonprofit board positions. Additionally, in Health & Human Services, 38.4% of boards had no Latino members, while Arts & Culture had 62% without Latino representation. We are actively working to address and correct these issues; the 2024 Avanzar IE Nonprofit Board Training was offered as a result of these findings.

IECF is proud to offer a free training program designed to provide foundational skills to Latino professionals who live or work in the Inland Empire and are interested in nonprofit board service. The Avanzar IE Nonprofit Board Leadership Training introduces participants to the nonprofit ecosystem in our region and equips them with the skills to become an effective board member. The program has been created for Inland Empire community members who are interested in learning about nonprofit board service and are thinking about joining a nonprofit board. What will you gain from the training?
During the sessions, subject-matter experts will present on various aspects of nonprofit board service, and participants will engage in small group activities and large group discussions around board service themes and topics. The learning opportunities include:
- An overview of the nonprofit sector
- Nonprofit board member roles and responsibilities
- Effective nonprofit governance practices
- Nonprofit sustainability and financials
- Personal branding
Topics discussed during each session are meant to deepen understanding of the basics of nonprofit board service. You will also have access to an extended network with opportunities for continued collaboration.
Training Session Outlines
Saturday, July 13th
- Board Governance 101: overview of the standard governance models, committee structures, positions, and promising practices
- Organizational Sustainability: defining sustainability, review of sustainability elements and practices of a sustainable organization, discussion of ethical issues
- Nonprofit Financials: fiduciary responsibilities, fiduciary versus financial responsibilities, and understanding nonprofit financial documents
Saturday, July 20th
- Personal Branding: elements to create a brand persona to create a brand that is authentic and inspires trust, learning to apply the basics of personal storytelling, etiquette and identify best practices for developing an online presence and effective use of social media
- Board Culture & Prospecting: DEI in nonprofit boards, characteristics of a progressive board, alignment of personal and professional values, information to gather and how to engage with a board
- Panel Discussion: hear from seasoned board members about their journey

The training is designed to provide foundational skills to community members and professionals interested in nonprofit board service. Participants will be equipped with the knowledge to become an effective board member who advances the mission to serve the local community.
Who is the program for?
These trainings are created for community members who are interested in learning about nonprofit board service and are actively planning on joining a nonprofit board within the next 1-2 years or have recently joined a board for the first time.
How much does it cost to participate in the program?
The program is free of charge, made possible through a grant from the Inland Empire Community Foundation. Participants are responsible for the cost of transportation to/from in-person events at the Inland Empire Community Foundation offices.
What is the time commitment to participate in the program?
There will be two Saturday sessions in-person on July 13th from 9:00am – 3:00pm and July 20th from 9:00am – 3:00pm.
